This recipe checks a lot of boxes for me as being yummy, versatile, easy, and thrifty. I spent less than $7 at the grocery store and less than 7 minutes in the kitchen! The ingredients are shelf-friendly, so they are easy to keep on hand for a last-minute dessert.

You will have minimal dishes to wash as all the ingredients are dumped straight into the cake pan. Let’s all give the cobbler dump cake a round of applause!

Dump cake cobblers are easy and versatile…..

  • bake them in a crockpot/slow cooker or oven (crockpot directions below)
  • try a variety of cake mix flavors such as: chocolate, yellow, lemon, or white cake mix
  • use canned fruit in lite to heavy syrup… or fruity pie filling such as apple, strawberry, or blueberry
  • you can use fresh or frozen fruit with homemade syrup
  • if 2 sticks (1 cup) of butter seems like too much you can use 1 stick (1/2 cup)

A lot of dump cake recipes favor yellow cake mix with fruit filling. The white cake mix and canned peaches have less sugar in a way that reminds me of shortbread. I prefer this fruit cobbler over fruit pie. To me… the gooey cake mix is better than pie crust!

I’m a little biased toward these flavors as this is the cobbler combination my grandma Jean would make. This recipe comes with her measurements. Grandmas know best!

What add-ins can I put on a Cobbler Dump Cake?

There are many add-ins to consider depending upon your preferences. I recommend a sprinkle of oatmeal, cinnamon, coconut, nuts, or chocolate chips.

Before you pour the butter onto the cake mix, sprinkle on your add-ins. The butter will help to caramelize and crisp the toppings. Bake and serve with ice cream or whipped cream and a drizzle of caramel or chocolate syrup.

Experiment with different flavors and keep the chocolate flavors together. A chocolate cherry dump cake with hot fudge!

Think of Fall with an apple dump cake sprinkled with cinnamon and topped off with caramel sauce. Or keep it simple with a strawberry dump cake with vanilla ice cream, just like strawberries and cream. Cruise the baking aisle and let your taste buds be your guide!

Below I have a peach cobbler on the left with coconut and pecans on half of the cobbler. On the right, I made a blackberry cobbler with oatmeal on half. The blackberry cobbler has a nice flavor and the color was delightful. These canned blackberries had seeds in them, which I didn’t care for.

I added toppings to half of the cobbler for demonstration purposes and to appease the picky eaters in my home. Feel free to do the same!

For additional inspiration, I found these cake mixes on Walmart.com…… strawberry, lemon, butter pecan, and banana! How fun it would be to try a lemon pineapple cobbler or an apple butter pecan cobbler! Experiment with different ice cream flavors like butter pecan, cinnamon, or lavender.

Has anyone tried a sugar-free cobbler?

I am curious to try a sugar-free or reduced-sugar version! If someone has please let me know below! I have seen the Pillsbury zero-sugar cake mixes online and the no-sugar-added pie fillings and canned fruit in the grocery store.

You could even top it with an ice cream that has reduced sugar. Or add a preferred sweetener.

How do you make a peach cobbler dump cake?

You may have guessed that this cobbler is called a peach cobbler dump cake because you simply dump the ingredients, fruit first, into a greased cake pan. No stirring is needed, no mixing bowl is required. Tastes like a delicious peach crisp!

You will need these 3 ingredients: a cake mix, 1 stick of butter (or up to 2 sticks), and a can of fruit… plus any toppings you may desire. The fruit can be in heavy or light syrup, or as a pie filling. For this cake mix peach cobbler recipe I am using a can of peaches.

Dump the fruit into a greased baking dish (DO NOT DRAIN THE FRUIT) followed by the dry cake mix on top of the peaches. The cake mix will soak up the peach juice. For an added cobbler topping… you can add a light sprinkling of nuts, coconut, oatmeal, or cinnamon on top of the cake mix. Finish it off with the melted butter. NO stirring is required, no mixing bowl is needed!

If you choose to use one stick of butter instead of two you will need a mixing bowl. Combine the cake mix with the melted butter in a bowl first and evenly distribute on top of the fruit. This will ensure enough of the cake mix is moistened. As seen below, the cake mix can go into the oven with some dry patches. As long as most of the cake mix is covered in butter. It is pretty forgiving!

Baking & Storage Directions ……

The peach cobbler dump cake should bake for 25-30 min in a preheated oven, set to 350 degrees. Allow the cobbler to rest and cool for 10-15 minutes at room temperature. This will give the top of the cobbler a chance to harden. Serve warm and don’t forget the ice cream or whipped cream with maybe a drizzle of caramel on top!

You can easily reheat the cobbler in the microwave or oven…. if you have leftovers. Store the cobbler in an airtight container, in the fridge, for 3-4 days.

Peach Cobbler Dump Cake Substitutions

  • Crockpot Method – Grease your crockpot and cook the cobbler on high for 2 hours, or low for 4 hours. Follow the recipe as usual.
  • Cake Mix – You can also use a yellow cake mix or butter pecan cake mix with the peaches. (If you want to make a different cobbler variation, without peaches, reference suggestions above)
  • Fruit – You can use fresh or frozen fruit, canned fruit (in light or heavy syrup), or fruit pie filling. If you like your cobbler with more fruity filling you can use 2 cans of fruit or double the amount of fresh peaches
  • Fresh Peaches – If you don’t mind a few extra steps, here is a great Peach Cobbler dump cake recipe with fresh or frozen peaches here at the Small Town Woman
  • Butter – I use 2 sticks of butter (1 cup) but you can use 1 stick (1/2 cup) ….. you may need to combine the cake mix with the butter before you add it to ensure enough of the cake mix is moistened

This is a simple peach cobbler recipe, the perfect dessert with juicy peaches, hot gooey crust, and a cold scoop of ice cream! I think this could easily be a family favorite, made in a pinch for the whole family to enjoy!

Notes

Leftovers: Reheat the cobbler in microwave or oven. Store the cobbler, tightly sealed, in the fridge for 3 to 4 days.
Try other pairings of cake mix and fruit. The measurements remain the same. The most popular cake mix flavors include yellow, white, or chocolate cake mix.
Pick a fruit that complements the cake mix such as… chocolate cake mix w/ cherry pie filling and hot fudge! Or a lemon cake mix w/ canned pineapple and frozen yogurt on top! Cruise the baking aisle and let your taste buds be your guide!
SUBSTITUTIONS: You can double the amount of fruit. Use one stick of butter instead of two. If using less butter, mix the cake mix with the melted butter in a bowl first. Then sprinkle on top of the fruit… to ensure the cake mix is moist enough.
Use canned fruit in light or heavy syrup (such as peaches, pineapple, or blackberries) OR swap with pie filling (such as cherry, blueberry, strawberry, or apple).
This cobbler can be made in the crockpot. Grease the crockpot and cook the cobbler on high for 2 hours or on low for 4 hours.
